Behind the Whistle: Ben O'Keeffe on Refereeing, Resilience, and Online Realities
In today's rapidly evolving digital sports landscape, managing online engagement, brand reputation and athlete well-being are paramount.
Areto Labs is proud to present an insightful discussion with our newest ambassador, New Zealand rugby referee Ben O'Keeffe. A pivotal figure in sports, who will be officiating the upcoming Rugby World Cup 2023 in France, Ben shares his experiences with social media, online abuse and their impact on his mental health and performance on and off the field.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
Ben: I grew up in Blenheim, New Zealand, a fervent sports fan from the outset. Competing against my siblings in every sport available was a big part of my childhood. My love for rugby was evident as I played frequently, but my fondest memories are of watching my dad referee local club games. My refereeing journey began at Otago University, and I haven't looked back since. Being a referee at RWC2019 in Japan was a milestone, and I'm eagerly awaiting RWC2023 in France.
What motivated you to engage in a partnership with Areto Labs?
Ben: The digital age has revolutionized our means of connection. Social media has bridged distances, but it also has its dark side. Increased accessibility to public figures has escalated online bullying and abuse. Engaging with Areto Labs and their innovative software was a means to address this growing concern.
What impact has social media had on your life?
Ben: It's been instrumental in giving an inside look into my life as a referee for top-tier games. My aim is to inspire upcoming generations of referees, and social media has been the perfect platform to reach them.
Have you ever experienced social media abuse or toxicity? How did you handle it?
Ben: Post-match, referees often face a barrage of online hate, but after the 2023 Super Rugby Final, the abuse became personal. I was inundated with threats against myself and my family. I made a conscious decision to expose this on my platform to shed light on the hidden toxicity of direct messages and to assure fellow referees that they aren't alone in facing such adversity.
What do you think is the future of social media?
Ben: Social media is an invaluable tool for connectivity. However, a framework needs to be established to curb harmful behavior.
How do you think online abuse affects mental health and well-being?
Ben: Online abuse can deeply scar, regardless of its frequency or the individual's resilience. Its covert nature makes it even harder to discuss, amplifying the need for a conversation on mental health and well-being.
What advice would you give to someone who is experiencing online abuse or cyberbullying?
Ben: Realize you're not isolated in this struggle. A vast support network exists, comprising friends, family, and various organizations. Reach out, converse, and you'll find the assistance you need.
Ben O'Keeffe's journey underscores the pressing need to foster a more positive digital community in rugby and towards referees en masse. With champions like him by our side, Areto Labs is steadfast in pioneering solutions that ensure online spaces are secure, inclusive and empowering.
